When Will I Start to See Results?

When Will I Start to See Results?

Making a difference.

Results.

We have all heard of ROI! Return On Investment. When dealing with social media marketing, this question is always in the back of every business owner’s mind. They want results for the money they invest. “How soon should I see results from my social media campaign or your management of my social media marketing?”

Nearly every client that I meet and share with them about my services will ask this question. Of course, this is a very logical and important question for a business owner to ask – after all, they do this for other services, why not social media.  If they hire someone to come and re-shingle a roof, they would ask, “how long will it take you to complete the re-shingling of the roof?” and the answer is quickly given, “2 full days, which 2 days would you like us to come?” Social media is advertising, so just “go on the internet and tell everyone I am here and buy from me”. So the business expects people in door within days, like it might happen from a TV commercial campaign! Unfortunately, it isn’t that easy. Social media has its own time frame and is dependent on – people’s ability to KNOW, LIKE and TRUST you. They will need to TRUST you before they will buy.

My Story

May I take a moment here to share with you my journey in how I began my business in social media? It will become apparent at the end in answering the question, “when will I start to see a difference when I start to do social media for my business?”

I was in a direct sales multi-level business reaching out to businesses (B2B) and to regular type consumers (B2C), but I was focused on B2B. I knew that all I needed to do was to reach out and just “let them know, and they will buy!” So, I visited many networking meeting groups and people recognized me and my business in due time. (*Note keyword – due time). During that time I was just DRIVEN to learn how to sell my products and convince prospects that what I had was of great value. BUT! I was scared to death of actually having someone tell me no! What happens when you are in sales? You get told no, many times! Each time I heard no, or even “not at this time”, I shrunk inwardly. My demeanor became less confident. BUT I learned a ton of how to talk to people and I did make lots of good friends and acquaintances.

Also during this time, I became unemployed and had applied to a small outdoor jumping blow up entertainment equipment company.  I applied to be their phones and sales person. I quickly learned that they had a weak marketing plan. I also realized that the owners/managers were crude and gruff. Not really my kind of people I’d be comfortable working with. BUT if I worked as a contractor to build up their marketing and sales, I could work from home! No need to work directly under them. So I made a proposal. I proposed to them to let me take the lead and build their reputation with better outreach, networking, and some social media. Initially, they liked my plan, and were excited about my plans and were bringing me in for orientation. But my initial instincts about this company proved to be true, they suddenly did a rude about face and sent me home. (They didn’t ever meet with me to say that they changed their mind, on what was to be my first day at work!)  What I learned about this experience was that I could actually convincingly promote myself as my own business in helping market other businesses that needed help. I had enough confidence in marketing and I found my voice! I was just beginning to see how social media was going to play in this idea.

Now having brought together two business ideas into one, I realized that marketing and social media might be my avenue of making my income. Several people said I needed to stop showing others how to grow their presence with social media, but actually get paid doing it. Many had already told me that they saw what I did in my business because they knew me for something they saw online on Facebook and Linkedin. THEY HEARD OF ME! I had no idea! All this time, my social media was working, and I had no clue really, yet! After all, the conversations online were small but sincere, just not that many. I was still in the dark on how social media even existed online! I didn’t know how Facebook pages/profiles even were made to look professional, nor on Twitter. So, I began to study and I found mentors that I hooked up with. They shared how to build a business with social media management. At one point I listened to a panel of BIG AGENCY advertising experts talk about social media and I listened to their answers to the audience’s questions.  The questions given to the panel were all good questions and the ANSWERS from the panel were ….answers that I knew! I realized that I knew enough to become like one of them for social media! I decided to start my company, Social Focus by CG, social media marketing and management.

Then and Now

What I knew then and what I know now is so completely well beyond incredibly different. I built my business on very little knowledge, but just the basics. However, because of hard work and consistent work on my social media and on other client’s social media, I’ve learned how to grow business presence online. I’ve put my direct sales training into use to meet business owners and promote my business as an answer to their social media marketing needs. I found my voice to share valuable knowledge to help companies explore how to promote themselves better in their marketing. Now, after 2 years as Social Focus by CG, I’ve coached several dozen individuals in direct sales, small business owners and entrepreneurs. I’ve managed the social media marketing for a heating and air conditioning company, roofing company, put a bed and breakfast establishment on the map, and build a welcoming and warm community for a chiropractic clinic. I’ve had to manage my own social media marketing in order to extend my services across the United States. My social media platforms are increasing in the thousands in numbers, and especially locally I am well known as a social media expert who is available to serve small business owners.

Making A Difference

So, to answer a business owner’s question, “when will I start to see results?” In the past 3 years I’ve used social media to make a difference in my ability to make an income. In the past 3 years I’ve made a difference making many relationships online and in person, because of my social media. In the past 3 years, I made a difference by being able to put wings under other people’s dreams, as well. In the past 3 years I’ve made a difference because of my own self makeover and I am a stronger, more whole of a person, because of my social media connections. So, when did I begin to see a difference in my business because of the social media that I did? My answer is….IN TIME, depending on how hard and focused you are in promoting yourself via social media. It also depends on how determined you are to MAKE A DIFFERENCE for yourself and in your own business to be successful. In truth, you start to see a difference when you DECIDE to make a difference. In other words, you could start to see results…..TODAY!

See results and make a difference TODAY in your business!

Everyone wants results right this minute. Whether it’s from social media or losing weight. Social media is such a different medium for marketing and promotion that a lot of people just don’t get it. Congrats on your journey, by the way!

This is a great way of looking at it. You can’t expect everything to fall in place overnight, especially like you said, just hoping people will buy your stuff. Thank you for sharing your journey and letting me into your world. Great post!

Thanks Heather and others who said the same! Yes, my journey has been interesting and this isn’t have of it! That part may come later, but for now, making good relationships and helping other businesses/individuals become powerhouses of influence and expertise is my aim.

Great Article Cheryl! It’s amazing what we can do when we build our confidence. As a small business owner I know how important social media is to my business. Unfortunately I see so many small business owners give up because they don’t see results right away. I’ve connected with so many people with social media and it’s a great way to get brand recognition.

Yes, I have had clients think that “well, my office assistant can do that!” Well, they can do postings but they have no idea how to market themselves – traditionally OR on social media. Just because they are on Facebook doesn’t a marketer make!

Beautiful post, Cheryl! You’re right — it all depends on persistence and determination. Deciding to make a difference, and going for it! In time, the Know Like Trust factor grows, and grows.

I think it is so wise to tell people that they may not see results the day after they get started! When I first started using social media I had the wrong idea about what to expect and how long it would take. It’s great to tell people that right upfront. 😉

We live in a world of instant gratification and all too often people forget businesses don’t evolve overnight. Like a flower, businesses have to have roots, and grow like the stem before the flower blossoms.

Thanks for sharing your story, love hearing how people end up where they are. For me I have learned social media the hard way but have built my business on it. Training is key.

I agree with you wholeheartedly! My husband on the other hand is very impatient and wants results TODAY! I don’t know why anyone views social media as being different from traditional marketing. It all takes time and patience.

Great article Cheryl. I can totally relate to that fear and worry about rejection when selling. It nearly cost me my business when starting out. Your own self-confidence in what you do and how you help people is key. If you don’t believe it, how will they?

The interesting thing about social media folks is that we’ve almost set ourselves up for failure. We have jumped for joy when speaking on the value of social media (and of course, there IS value) but we’ve done this so much that everyone now thinks they can do it for themselves with no effort and earn 10,000 fans in 90 days and suddenly become rich.

Like anything else, it begins with relationships and those don’t happen overnight.

That’s right! Whenever we make a difference in the lives of other people, we are already getting results. It may not seem to be a huge business win, but the fact that you were able to positively affect other people is already a big ROI.

Great post! Rome was definitely not built in a day. How else do you plan to make a difference in the future?

We cannot expect to see results immediately with our social media marketing efforts, but we must know that in time like Cheryl has said we shall see them. We must be patient and before we know it our hard work would have paid off.
