How to Identify Your Target Audience

Who is your IDEAL Customer?

As the marketing person for your business, being aware of your Target Audience’s needs is vital! When you look at Facebook you have a myriad of people to share with. You want them to become your customer so you are hoping for lots of conversions from there. After all, it holds your Target Audience or IDEAL customer in its ranks. With 4.1 Billion users it should! YOUR audience is in there. But do you really know who they are?

Eureka!

Let’s take a look at how you can identify your target audience. Why? So you can talk specifically to them. You will want to create your Value Proposition in such a way (personally) as to “solve” their problem. In doing this you will make them feel like you are personally talking to them and that you understand THEIR problem and are attending to them, giving them that solution. It isn’t a one-size-fits-all model! AH! This should be a “EUREKA!” moment!

Identify their problem

Knowing the problem or problems, and providing a solution for each is the language of great marketing! When you give it to them in a personal way, they are more likely to pay attention and become a loyal customer!  You will want to engage with them where THEY are in THEIR world on social media, (or anywhere, in person or online). Also, you want to be the ONE who can do this, and be the “go to” person amidst your competitors.

Start doing the research

To begin your research, start looking for ways to relate to your customer. Perhaps your customer resides in a special niche. They may not be necessarily looking for YOU on your social media platform so you will need to show up in THEIR feeds and draw them in. First, you need to understand who and where they are.

Therefore, doing this exercise will help you and motivate you to talk directly to that niche. You probably have been just speaking to that large crowd, hoping for someone to step out and buy. No one wants to be just a part of the “crowd”. They want to be made to feel special and nurtured into a relationship with you as their “go-to” person.

Get to know more intimately who your IDEAL client is – who are you talking to? Get your pencil and paper out because you really need to write this down and keep it! You can use it to trigger the right questions and status in your posts with these answers!

Here are some steps/exercises to help you do just that. Answer these questions:

WHO

  • Who are they?
  • Who do they hang out with?
  • Who do they want to be?

WHAT

  • What is their most pressing concern or problem?
  • What are their needs?
  • What are their desires or wants?
  • What do they worry about?
  • What motivates them?

WHY

  • Why do they need help?
  • Why can you help them?
  • Why are you the solution they need?

HOW

  • How will you help?
  • How will you solve the problem or provide the solution?
  • How will you serve them?

One of the bits of social media marketing that many people haven’t really given much thought to is the use of social media to research out their best or IDEAL customer. With Facebook and Twitter, just to start, there is a wealth of data collected to help you.

To help your research go faster, the use of the # hashtag is important for your search in Twitter, and Instagram.  

Pinterest makes it easy – all you need to do is type in your search terms and all Pinterest posts using those “keywords” with show up.

To find this in your Facebook, go to the top right corner, find Manage Ads in the drop down, look for the parallel lines next to the words “Ad Manager” open those, find the words AUDIENCE INSIGHTS – left side, click and open and you should see the graphic that is below. Follow there to pull your audience

With Facebook, the Ads Manager, or Power Editor within Ads Manager, is truly powerful for research. (You need not be afraid to go in. Explore. You won’t accidentally charge yourself and not know it!) How to do ads IN FACEBOOK is another blog altogether, but for this article, if you are willing, dive into the Choose an Audience to Start section and learn more about the Pages and the people that are looking at you and who are looking at similar Pages as you and then you can seek them out. Friend those people, follow their pages LIKES, analyze what got them to engage with other social media pages. In other words – TARGET them with your words that fit their culture, their interests that solve their problem, and earn their loyalty!

Another great tool and for FREE you can get lots of good information is from www.fanpagekarma.com. With this tool, you can compare different Facebook pages and see how they are interacting, how much engagement they are getting, what their top posts (or yours too) are, what are the top hashtags that are getting the results you see, top pics and videos – so much to LEARN about your possible target audience!

Beware you will love this research tool and browse forever in it, and have LOTS of fun doing it!! Ask me how I know…

In Summary

I’ve just outlined ways to think of how you will find your Target Audience and who your IDEAL customer is. Get familiar and comfortable with these tools.

Lastly, you will want to relate personally with your Target Audience and IDEAL customer and speak like you really know them! If they feel you are understanding their problem that they want to solve and YOU are the one that can do it, you will gain their loyalty and trust. This is the goal of all marketing! After being seen and recognized, keeping them with this PERSONAL relationship that is KEY in your social media (that is what it is for, remember?) you can create the culture to KEEP your new found customer/audience! When they pay attention they will love your attention and become a regular returning customer! SUCCESS!

Hi Cheryl,

This is something that I’ve been looking at more and more lately – ‘identifying target audiences.’ I have started to run more facebook ads for clients and target audience is super important. I love that facebook allows you to be super specific with audience targeting. I’m pinning this post for later!
